What Causes Diabetes (Type 2) and What Lifestyle Changes You Can Make To Fight It?

Knowing what causes diabetes (the type 2 version) is the first step in being able to take action to successfully minimize it's effects. Unlike type 1 diabetes that has no known cure and where those inflicted with the disease face a lifetime of insulin shots, type 2 diabetes can be dealt with by making a few changes to your lifestyle and daily living habits.

What Causes Diabetes Type 2?

The biggest factor that leads to the development of type 2 diabetes is being overweight. And the more overweight that you are, the greater the chances are that you will eventually develop diabetes. Since many individuals have much more fat on their bodies than what is considered healthy, this may be very concerning. But it shouldn't be. It should be seen as empowering.

If you already have type 2 diabetes or on your way to developing it (if you are overweight), there are things you can do right now (today) to minimize the negative effects caused by diabetes or prevent yourself from getting it at all. Anything that you can do to get rid of the unwanted and unhealthy amounts of body fat will drastically cut your likelihood of being diabetic.

Things You Can Do To Reduce The Effects of Diabetes (Type 2) and/or Prevent Its Onset:

1. Switch to a low carb diet. Most people gain weight because they simply consume too much simple carbs found in breads, pastas, rice, and sugar. By temporarily going to a low carb diet, you force the body to burn off its carbohydrate supplies quickly and then have to go to its fat reserves in order to get energy to use. A low carb diet consists of meats, cheeses, and complex carb vegetables like lettuce, spinach, and celery.

2. Do exercise daily. Most people lead sedentary lives (meaning that they sit around a lot). Just going for a 15 minute walk each day will causes the body to burn more calories and cause less of the foods that you eat to be converted into fat.

3. Get more sleep. Studies show that there is an inverse relationship between sleep and the amount of body weight an individual has. The less sleep a person gets on a regular basis, the more likely that individual is to be overweight. So be sure to get adequate amounts of sleep each night.

By knowing what causes diabetes, you have a better idea of what changes you can make in your life to prevent you from getting this disease, or at least knowing what to do in order to minimize its effects. Although millions of people worldwide have type 2 diabetes, its encouraging that you can take action against it.
