My Life With Diabetes

I was diagnosed as a type 1 diabetic at the age of 2. I am now 33 at the time of print. Life has been a challenge and I wanted to give all you readers an insight into my life. It's also good to vent sometimes.

Growing up with type 1 diabetes was a challenge. I remember learning to inject myself at the age of 5 practising on my teddy bear (hope he didn't mind!) before taking the plunge with my own leg. At school break time I would sit in the classroom eating my 2 digestives before I was allowed out to play. This may be why I can't stand them now. As I got older, secondary school was much easier. I only told my friends and teachers about my diabetes. i wasn't embarrassed but saw no reason to share with the rest of the school. If you are reading this and are a diabetic, you will probably agree that having type 1 or type 2 diabetes really doesn't have to affect your normal everyday living.

As I got older and discovered adult things i.e. drinking, woman and parties, I found that I would often have very high blood sugar levels and my control went a little wayward. I do believe that this may have helped towards my problems.

Approximately 6 years ago I had huge problems with extra sensitive legs and my back was always in agony. I was seeing a chiropractor, who, despite charging me a fortune and telling me my back was full of knots made no difference at all. After a trip to my diabetic doctor, I discovered that I had nerve damage due to my previous lack of control. I have since got my levels back to a fantastic average and have not had any problems since.

That sadly is not the end of my story. About 2 years ago I woke up one morning with a black line across my vision in 1 eye. After a trip to the emergency eye doctor I discovered that I had damaged my eyes. They believe that the main cause was a biking accident when I was 18. This was not a motorbike but a push bike accident after a pub crawl (we thought we could get round them quicker!) I have since had 5 lots of laser treatment and also eye surgery. I am registered partially sighted and am just hoping that I won't lose all my sight.

Diabetes survival is key and with the amazing progress that is happening, you never know but there may be a cure!

- That is not to say once you have cured hypoglycemia, you will not be able to relax your diet once in a while or even once a week. This requires a complete lifestyle change in order to keep your body healthy and everything working normal.

- Why is this change in diet so essential? Simply, your Western diet of simple carbohydrates (instant cereals) for breakfast, or no breakfast at all, a donut or pastry at 10:00 am tea and sandwiches for lunch has broken the normal functioning of your body. Your insulin, which regulates the sugar content of your blood levels, has been overworked because your body reacts to simple carbohydrates (refined foods) as though it were sugar and releases insulin to clear the blood of excess sugar. The constant overuse of insulin leads to problems and you then fall into the category of hypoglycemic.

- There are other "no-no" foods and drinks such as coffee and there are other foods which have to be taken instead of refined foods (e.g fiber). And there are other actions which have to be taken (e.g. exercise). All these will be elaborated in other articles.

Energy drinks have infiltrated every corner of the quick grab-and-go beverage industry in our lives. This type of beverage is now found at the grocery store, beer and soda outlet, the corner store, gas stations, fast food outlets, sports arenas, and even from the soda machine sitting on a street sidewalk in front of a storefront. Almost anywhere you stop, if cold drinks are served, many selections of energy drinks are usually part of your selection.

What Is The Purpose Of Energy Drinks

Do you remember when energy drinks were first introduced to the market? In those days, all of the advertising of these drinks was targeted for individuals which commonly played in high-energy sporting events as an electrolyte booster. You realize you just feel so good. That bottle actually works. You can hardly believe all these advantages just came from a bottle. But, did anyone ever stop to wonder why?

Now you are sitting here contemplating feeding it another bottle all over again. That will be twice in the same afternoon. Now, if you are lucky you will get off of work (or get out of school) and be able to hit the basketball courts for a game with the guys. Or maybe it's riding your bike, playing a round of golf or any other type of high aerobic activity. All of that exertion will help wear off those extra high blood sugars, hopefully before dinner time. But for a diabetic with early stages of complications, just the act of walking becomes difficult at times. Who do you think is going to do some heavy exercise? Dinner has come and gone and your medications still have not been able to keep up with all those extra high doses of sugar from this afternoon. You have already had dinner and those foods actually drove it even higher. Your body is now paying for the mistake of drinking too many sugars this afternoon but your mind is beating yourself up because of the guilt. The numbers on your glucose meter are enough to show you that you really screwed up this time.

What's A Better Alternative

There is times when even a diabetic can have an electrolyte imbalance in their system. Maybe it was from mowing the lawn, weeding the garden, a trip to the beach, an afternoon out bird-watching. Almost anything in the hot sun can lead to dehydration. But how can you fix this without reaching for one of those high sugary energy drinks? This situation now needs to be approached in stages. Depending on the severity of your condition, start at the top of this list and work your way down. The clinical name for diabetes foot pain is peripheral neuropathy, a condition where the small nerves fibers in the feet have become damaged by the effects of diabetes. Peripheral nerves are supposed to transmit information back to the brain, for example when your feet are hot or cold or you just stepped on a sharp object. People may not realize they have been cut or that a cut is becoming infected. Each peripheral nerve has a specific function and a unique job. The beneficial effect is greater and lasts longer if the patient is trained on a regular basis: the glucose utilization can increase by 30-35% compared with the usual levels and the increase is proportional to the improvement of aerobic power.

In patients with type two diabetes who are physically active, the most common complication is hypoglycemia both during and after exercise. This happens both to those treated with replacement therapy and to those who are treated with oral hypoglycemic agents that stimulate hormone secretion by the pancreas.

Different Types of Exercise

The blood glucose response and the use of metabolic substrates depend on whether a physical activity is of very short duration but high intensity (anaerobic alactacid), of medium intensity and medium-short duration (anaerobic lactic acid) or low intensity with long duration (aerobic alactacid).

3. Don't smoke: Having diabetes alone can already increase your risk for heart disease and stroke. Smoking is like "adding more insult to injury". Nicotine, which is the addictive substance in tobacco products, constricts blood vessels and leads to high blood pressure. When you have diabetes, or are overweight AND smoke, your risk for heart disease and high blood pressure sharply rises.

4. Ask your doctor about aspirin: some studies reveal that taking low dose aspirin every day can decrease the risk for heart disease and stroke in Type 2 diabetes. However, never decide to take this medication on your own; talk it over with your doctor.

5. Watch out for Transient Ischemic Attacks or TIA's: TIA is commonly known as a mini or mild stroke. TIA's occur when the blood vessels supplying certain parts of the brain becomes compromised because of fatty deposits in the blood vessels in the brain. Symptoms of TIA may include:

loss of balance,sudden weakness,blurred vision,severe headache, andtransient slight facial asymmetry that resolves within twenty-four hours after the attack

Exercising, Diet and Reactive Hypoglycemia

If you have been diagnosed with Reactive Hypoglycemia or Idiopathic Postprandial Syndrome, hopefully by now you understand the connection with diet and how important it is to eat the right foods on the right schedule.

If not, I will give you a compact version of what you should be doing. Cut out all sugars, refined foods, starchy carbohydratess, alcohol and caffeine from your diet. Yes, it is a big change for a lot of people, but it is essential for you to feel good and to be healthy. You will need to eat foods that are low on the glycemic index that will not spike your blood sugar/glucose levels. You want to eat a diet high in fiber and protein, with fats and a very small amount of complex carbohydrates. Eat small meals every two to three hours and do not skip meals! Be consistent!

Also, when you do eat your complex carbohydrates, make sure you eat them with some fat and protein. For example, if you eat a half a bowl of oatmeal in the morning, eat it with butter and a serving of cottage cheese, or maybe even mix in a tablespoon of coconut oil. This will slow your body's absorption and keep your insulin from spiking. And as I'm sure you know, spiking your insulin is the root of this problem. Personally, this approach has been the key to me feeling my best and being able to live a normal life and exercise.

Now, it took me quite a while to get my diet down, knowing what to eat and when to eat it. There was a lot of trial and error, research and consultations with dietitians, doctors (which didn't help at all!) and nutritionists. Once I got the diet down (for the most part what I described above), that was just for everyday living. Now I needed to provided proper nutrition for my intense workouts that I was doing such as 1 hour weight training sessions and 2 hour martial arts sessions. I had to get my diet down to an exact science. In short, my diet had to fit my activities, and my activities had to fit my diet.

So on the days that I weight trained and did martial arts, I ate a quarter cup of oatmeal in the morning with butter and a tablespoon of coconut oil; and at lunch time a quarter of a baked sweet potato with butter and a tablespoon of coconut oil. Then, when it was training time, immediately before training, I would take 2 glucose tablets just before training, and 2 to 3 more tabs during training depending on how intense the workout was and how I felt. In the end, I learned that approximately 5 glucose tabs worked perfectly for me.

If you are have just been diagnosed with Reactive Hypoglycemia or Idiopathic Postprandial Syndrome (my diagnosis), I know that it can be very frustrating, but hang in there. I suggest keeping a food journal with detailed information on what you eat and the times that you eat. This will help you identify what is and is not working. Good luck in your journey to feeling better and remember that your diet means everything!

By effectively learning and implementing each of these into their daily life, many type 2 diabetics can reduce or eliminate their symptoms entirely. This can result in a decrease in medications which are necessary to control the high blood sugars.

But although the solution is so easy to put into words, implementing these strategies into daily life will be one of the most difficult routines an individual must ever perform.

Initially, the self-sacrifice, discipline, motivation and desire to slip back into their old comfort zone from their earlier days is often as strong or stronger than the reality that future problems may accumulate if a better plan of personal care is not implemented now. So having that friend for a "crutch" to help the diabetic through the rough mental transition of accepting their new reality and that careful eating and exercise habits are now necessary for their greater good in the future years to come. Careful adherence to that new plan can prevent many common diabetic complications.

So being a true friend to a diabetic is a crucial role to play whether your friend is a type 1 or a type 2 diabetic. The "job description" for the friend may be a little different, but the importance of your support is crucial to their continuing health.

Most dietician recommend plenty of fruits and vegetables for more fibre content. Whole grains are also given. These foods contain more nutritional value and have less fat and caloric values. Fats and sweets intake are not recommended however, should medical condition arises, sweets and fats are given in low dosages.
Because most diabetes I patients are children who have poor control over food choices, members of the same household need to adjust their food choices as well for less conflicts. As certain foods can cause spikes or rapid changes in blood sugar levels, it is best avoided or eliminated. The only effective way to change diet of diabetic patient is to check how each food affects the blood sugar as well as how the patient respond to the food they have eaten.
Regular exercise and Physical Activity- In healthy people, regular exercise plays an important role to support good health. This is even more important for Diabetes I patients. Aerobic exercise is best. Note that certain activities lower the levels blood sugar and may affect the patient for many hours after the activity. Frequent monitoring as well as adjustments in treatment and food intake change, when a new activity is introduced to the patient is needed.

Food choices taught carefully and early on thoroughly understood by children is important. Diabetes I: Signs and Symptoms To Look Out For

Have you ever thought that you or a member of your family would contract the dreaded autoimmune disease called Diabetes? Diabetes is not a temporary illness. It is a lifelong sickness that affects not only the person diagnosed with the disease, but the family as well.

Insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM), also called as juvenile onset diabetes mellitus or popularly known as Type I diabetes, is an autoimmune disease where one's own antibodies mistakenly attacks healthy blood cells. The anti-bodies destroy the beta cells of the pancreas. The beta cells are the ones responsible for insulin production thereby leading to failure of the pancreas to produce the insulin hormone.

Antibodies are part of the body's immune system that are produced by the body to attack infections or inflammations. There are cases wherein abnormal antibodies are produced therefore attack even healthy cells. To resolve this problem, diabetic patients take insulin shots every day to survive.

Signs and Symptoms

People who suspect that they are diabetic should look for the following signs and symptoms.
Blurred Vision/Rapid vision change - when the sugar levels in blood are too high, fluid deprivation from the tissues including the eye lenses. These causes blurring of vision and can lead to blindness later on.
Polyuria - diabetic people experience frequent urination. As tissues are deprived of fluids this causes extreme thirst resulting in frequent drinking. Frequent drinking affects urination leading to more frequency.
Polydipsia - Increased thirst for the same reason as stated above
Polyphagia - increased hunger caused by the lack of insulin affecting the sugar that reaches body cells. As the sugar cannot be delivered to cells, the cells are deprived of energy and thus hunger is triggered.
Weight loss - because blood sugar is not supplied in sufficient amounts to the cells, it shrinks from the deprivation causing shrinking of the cells of muscles and fat cells, which lead to weight loss.
Slow healing of infections and cuts - cuts heal extremely slowly which can lead to susceptibility to infections and inflammations
Extreme fatigue - because cells are deprived of energy sources, the result is fatigue

Obese and overweight people are often the group of people who are commonly diagnosed with the autoimmune disease. Support and care should always be considered carefully in all persons with this medical condition. With children especially, they should never be given the impression that they are different as this can cause many social and emotional problems later in life. While diabetes can affect emotions, this should be taken into consideration when caring for people with diabetes of all ages. There should be a balance so that this disease will not adversely affect people. Support groups for both the affected person and the caregiver are available and it is good to take advantage of these support groups. While the disease is serious, normalcy can be attained with proper care and management.

Opposite Action: An Effective Depression Coping Skill

Diabetes and depression have a strong relationship that has been described as bidirectional by several studies. The most recent study followed over 65,000 women ages 50 to 75 for 10 years. The study concluded that participants who had depressive symptoms were at a higher risk for a diabetes diagnosis and those with a diabetes diagnosis where at a higher risk for a depression diagnosis. Regardless of how the two diagnosis' manifest, depression can significantly impact one's motivation and desire to make healthy choices. This is understandable. If you are depressed then you are not interested in exercising and eating healthy. You are not interested in putting forth effort to count carbohydrates or eat a salad rather than a meatball sub. So how do you cope with the heavy lethargic dark low feelings of depression and overcome the impulsive decisions that can have detrimental effects on your body?

Opposite Action (OA) is a skill that originates from Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). Its effectiveness is rooted in its simplicity. The concept of OA is to recognize those times when you are on the threshold of making an unhealthy decision such as eating a large piece of cake, and challenging that impulse with another action that is opposite. OA is not about fighting the unhealthy urge or impulse, OA is about challenging the unhealthy impulse with a healthy action. It is important to engage fully in the opposite action with your entire body. Remember, it is action. It is not thinking about what is opposite. The more you engage your body in the opposite action the more likely the unhealthy impulse will shift in to an emotional experience that is pleasurable and healthy. And OA takes practice.

So what is the opposite of eating a large piece of cake? The answer is unique to you and the situation you find yourself in. One time it may involve eating a sliver of cake, and another time it may involve leaving the situation and going for a brisk walk. On the other hand, if you do eat the large piece of cake there may be some temporary relief but the depression will deepen, often fueled by guilt or shame. But a series of opposite actions over the course of a day can have a positive effect on how you feel about yourself as a person living with diabetes. It puts you in control of diabetes rather than diabetes being in control of you.

Another example is getting out of bed in the morning. Often when you are feeling depressed It can be a challenge to start your day and get out of bed. OA in this situation is getting out of bed and if there is an impulse to isolate and stay cooped up in your house, then get out and do something.

OA has been helping people with severe mental illness for decades with depression and other emotional experiences such as anxiety and anger. It can be a valuable tool you can add you're your coping kit when you are challenged by the daily grind of having diabetes, putting you in control.

How to Make Healthy Breakfast Foods for Diabetics - Oatmeal With Berries and Oatmeal Raisin Pancakes

One of the most important things a diabetic can do for themselves is to start their day off right with a healthy breakfast. Taking a few minutes in the morning to eat something healthy can be a key to controlling your blood sugar, yet we often grab something we know isn't quite right for us with the excuse that we are in a hurry. That type of 'in a hurry' can set you up for failure in controlling your blood sugar. Since oats are a very good source of soluble fiber which is very important to the diabetic's diet, this article offers a couple of recipes that are healthy, fit perfectly into a diabetic's diet, and they are quick and easy to prepare. The pancake recipe makes 12 pancakes using a fourth cup of batter for each. If you are constantly in a morning rush, make up all the batter, have a couple of pancakes (two are considered a serving) and allow the other ten to cool completely. Once cooled put them in freezer bags, 2 to a bag, and freeze. They can be microwaved quickly when needed. This does away with the excuse that you can't make this recipe because it would be wasteful. Plus you have 5 more servings of a healthy breakfast on hand.

OATMEAL RAISIN PANCAKES
2 cups quick cook oats
2 cups buttermilk
2 eggs*
2 tbsp canola oil
1/4 cup whole-wheat flour**
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
2 tbsp Splenda granular
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 cup raisins

In a small bowl combine the oats with the buttermilk and let stand for 5 minutes. Beat eggs and stir into the oats along with the canola oil. Set the mixture aside.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flours, Splenda, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon. Stir in the oat mixture just until flour mixture is moistened. Gently stir in the raisins.

Heat griddle or skillet to hot and spray with nonstick cooking spray. Pour batter, 1/4 cup at a time, onto the hot griddle. When the top of the pancakes start to bubble, turn. When second side is a golden brown, remove from heat.

*Or you may use 1/2 cup egg substitute.
**You may omit and replace with another 1/4 cup all-purpose flour.

Serve topped with a thin pat of butter and sugar-free maple flavored syrup.

Yield: 1 dozen

HOMEMADE OATMEAL WITH FRESH BLUEBERRIES
1 cup water
1/2 cup old-fashion oats
dash of salt, optional
2 tsp Splenda Brown Sugar Blend
2 tablespoons fresh blueberries*
1 tbsp fat-free cream

In a small saucepan bring the water to a boil; stir in oats and the salt, if using (best for you to omit salt if you can). Stirring constantly, cook over medium heat for 5 minutes.

Sprinkle the Splenda Brown Sugar Blend and the blueberries over the hot oatmeal. Drizzle with the cream.

*May substitute frozen blueberries that have been thawed.

Yield: 1 serving

With salt: 220 calories, 41 g carbs, 5 g fiber, 7 g protein, 3 g (0 sat)fat, 10 g sugar, 5 g cholesterol, 410 mg sodium

Note: Best to enjoy this healthy breakfast treat with a strip or two of turkey bacon for additional protein.
